James: I wouldn't take that. It has speed in it.
Me: There's speed in Allegra-D?
Deb: Oh, it's fine. There's only a little speed in it.

Article (?): Eco Aesthetic
Yeah! What he said:
And this begs the question - especially in lieu of situations like Tijuana - that when one billion people live in slum-like conditions that are parasitically conjoined with existing urban centers, does bringing people out to the desert, in a formerly unoccupied area, seem like a viable option to combat the global housing crisis. It comes off more as a defensive position, dropping out and going off the grid in a state of self-exile.
Movie: Where the Wild Things Are
Okay, this just officially got too hip for me: Opening Ceremony's Where the Wild Things Are collection
I almost cry every time I see the preview but I'm beginning to worry that this may turn out like "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius," where expectations are raised to the level they can't be met.

Today: Werner Herzog's Rogue Film School
Werner Herzog is opening a film school. Lucky students will get to meet with him in a hotel room and...learn about life.
From their About the School page.
8. Related, but more practical subjects, will be the art of lockpicking. Traveling on foot. The exhilaration of being shot at unsuccessfully. The athletic side of filmmaking. The creation of your own shooting permits. The neutralization of bureaucracy. Guerrilla tactics. Self reliance.
9. Censorship will be enforced. There will be no talk of shamans, of yoga classes, nutritional values, herbal teas, discovering your Boundaries, and Inner Growth.

11. Follow your vision. Form secretive Rogue Cells everywhere. At the same time, be not afraid of solitude.

Movie: Flood Tide
I've been loosely following the Swimming Cities of the Switchback Sea and Serenissima but this is the first time I've heard of this movie. I want to see this.
FLOOD TIDE
FLOOD TIDE is a narrative film about a journey down a river in the midst of ongoing economic and ecological collapse. The film tells the story of a group of friends who, driven by dreams, desperation, and a sense of adventure, decide to build a boat out of scrap material. As they begin to build more people gather at the river, assembling vessels out of the trash that surrounds them. Inspired, but uncertain, they set out down the river to make a new life for themselves.
FLOOD TIDE blends narrative, cinema verite, and improvised experimental film. The film was shot amidst the artist Swoon’s 2008 Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea project, in which seven homespun boats were built and crewed by an eclectic group of artists and performers. The boats floated down the Hudson River staging performances in towns along the way.

Article: Netflix Awards $1 Million Prize and Starts a New Contest
Netflix holds a competition for a better recommendation software than its current one. Interesting for competition and business.
article from the NY Times.
The company’s challenge, begun in October 2006, was both geeky and formidable: come up with a recommendation software that could do a better job accurately predicting the movies customers would like than Netflix’s in-house software, Cinematch. To qualify for the prize, entries had to be at least 10 percent better than Cinematch.

Today: Revenge
from Karl Lagerfeld's Twitter today:
Forgiveness is too easy. I can forget by indifference, but not forgive. I prefer revenge.
I live by Lagerfeld.

Movie: Paper Heart
I want to see this.
Because it's about love and it stars (and is written by) the page from 30 Rock. And I have a feeling it's one of those movies that I'll end up grinning like an idiot through.
I saw a review and found out that the romance between Cera and Yi is fictional which is disappointing because it's supposed to be a movie about a cynic of love. And part of the reason she's a cynic is because of Hollywood and media portrayal of love. Sooooo, it's a movie about the fable that is love and they throw in a fake love story amongst the real stories?...the logic is a bit jagged...unless it's some reverse psychology that I can't wrap my head around.
But I still want to watch it because of the aforementioned reasons and because I'm a sucker for fake love stories. Especially one with a how-to-woo-a-hipster-girl soundtrack. And there are paper dolls and I'm a sucker for cutesy-craft-nerd aesthetic.
Today: Viv
(watching Ratatouille)
V: I think there're too many movies with mice. It's been done too many times.
Me: What? What other movies?
V: Like Stuart Little. I guess G-force is guineau pigs but they're just like mice but fatter - fat mice. They need to mix it up.
Me: But mice work in Ratatouille because you find mice in restaurants. What other animals would you choose?
V: I don't know...maybe lizards.
Me: What???? Lizards? It's in a restaurant. There are no lizards in restaurants.
V: There might be lizards. Or...spiders. It could be spiders.
Me: WHAT? Spiders don't cook! It can't be spiders.
V: They might cook. You just might not see them. There are no good spiders in movies. Except for Aragog in Harry Potter and she was evil. There need to be more good spiders in movies.
Me: I'm not talking to you anymore.

Movie: The Year My Parents Went on Vacation
I was in a bad mood. Then I watched this movie. Coming of age story in an age of turmoil + nice visuals, always = nice combination.

Interview: Alexander Skarsgard
Hot man talking about cities. So refreshing after 17 zillion videos of him being asked about vampires.
He seems very gracious and the interviewer is well-informed and interesting as well.
And yes, he's easy on the eyes.

How did I miss this line the first three times I saw "In Bruges"?
Brendan: We shall strike a balance between culture and fun.
Colin : Somehow I believe, Ken, that the balance shall tip in the favor of culture, like a big fat fucking retarded fucking black girl on a see-saw opposite... a dwarf.

Survey of friendship
read recently that it is based on proximity and race but I am not sure about this. Things I would judge a person on:
1. do they like Gwyneth Paltrow? Correct answer: no
2. do they like The Simpsons? Correct answer: yes
3. do they eat meat? Correct answer: yes but, this varies.
4. must not be racist
5. must not be classist
6. can they accept atheists as friends? correct answer: yes
7. do they like cheese? correct answer: yes

Random thought
On my ex: I should have known it wouldn't last when he told me he once had a crush on Gwyneth Paltrow.
Article: Profile of Atul Gawande
Surgeon, teacher, writer, brilliance. from Harvard magazine blah blah blah.
The two men share a fervent belief that pulling back the veil on medicine will do more good than harm, even if it means pushing transparency’s limits right up to the edge of lawsuit territory. “What is the alternative to understanding the complexity of the world?” Gawande asks. “It’s denying it. There’s no way that’s a successful strategy.”
